Gramitherm awarded the “Bio-based Product” Label

Gramitherm Europe SA, manufacturer of an innovative insulation made from grass fibers, has officially been granted the “Bio-based Product – Walloon Supply Chain” label by Christophe Collignon, Walloon Minister for Housing. This certification highlights both the ecological performance and regional anchoring of the company.

The “Bio-based Product – Walloon Supply Chain” Label: what does it mean?

This label, launched by the Eco-construction Cluster in partnership with the Walloon Region, certifies the exact proportion of bio-based materials contained in a construction product, while promoting local supply chains.

In the insulation category, the minimum threshold is set at 70% bio-based content. The “local supply chain” option requires that at least 80% of the raw materials are produced or processed within a 350 km radius of the manufacturing site. This standard enhances transparency and strengthens regional value chains.

Why did Gramitherm receive this label?

  • High bio-based content Gramitherm insulation is composed of 88% bio-based material, sourced within 300 km of its Walloon factory—far above the label’s requirements.
  • Local, short supply chain production The use of regional biomass and a strong local footprint are key factors acknowledged by this label.
  • Durable and high-performance material Gramitherm insulation not only offers an excellent carbon balance (sequestering more CO₂ than it emits) but is also backed by a European Technical Assessment (ETA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs/FDES) published in the INIES database. Its production process follows a circular economy model with zero waste.

Benefits of this certification

  • Reinforced credibility with architects, builders, and professionals in the construction sector, thanks to the certified composition and origin of the material.
  • Support for the Walloon eco-construction industry, highlighting regional resources and know-how.
  • Financial incentives for end users: in Wallonia, the label qualifies for a 25% bonus on renovation insulation subsidies, while in Brussels, additional grants of up to €10/m² may apply.

Context and future perspectives

This label is part of a broader initiative by the Walloon Region to promote bio-based materials and reduce the environmental footprint of the construction sector—responsible for 38% of CO₂ emissions and 40% of energy consumption in Europe.

With this recognition, Gramitherm positions itself as a key player in eco-construction, combining technical performance, sustainability, and positive local socio-economic impact.

Conclusion

The “Bio-based Product – Walloon Supply Chain” label represents a significant achievement for Gramitherm Europe SA, consolidating its role as a pioneer in bio-based and circular insulation. More than just a material, Gramitherm is a structuring solution for sustainable and regional construction.
